Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic and rigorous style of yoga that follows a specific sequence of postures, synchronized with deep and rhythmic breathing. Founded by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the 20th century, Ashtanga Yoga is based on ancient yoga teachings outlined in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The term “Ashtanga” translates to “eight limbs,” referring to the eight-fold path of yoga as described by Patanjali.
Central to Ashtanga Yoga is the practice of asanas, or physical postures, which are organized into a set sequence of poses. The primary series, known as Yoga Chikitsa or Yoga Therapy, focuses on detoxifying and aligning the body. This series begins with sun salutations (Surya Namaskara) and moves through a sequence of standing, seated, and finishing postures. The secondary series, called Nadi Shodhana or Nerve Purification, builds upon the foundation of the primary series and introduces more challenging poses to further strengthen and open the body.
In Ashtanga Yoga, each movement is linked with a specific breath, creating a continuous flow of energy throughout the practice. This synchronized breathing technique, known as ujjayi pranayama, helps to generate internal heat, purify the body, and focus the mind. The combined practice of asanas and ujjayi breathing creates a moving meditation, allowing practitioners to cultivate mindfulness and concentration as they move through the sequence.
Another characteristic of Ashtanga Yoga is the use of drishti, or focal points, during the practice of asanas. Each pose is associated with a specific drishti, which helps to direct and concentrate the gaze, promoting concentration and inner awareness. By maintaining a steady gaze, practitioners are encouraged to remain present and centered throughout their practice.
Ashtanga Yoga is traditionally taught in a Mysore-style format, named after the city of Mysore in India where Sri K. Pattabhi Jois taught for many years. In Mysore-style classes, students practice the sequence at their own pace, receiving individualized guidance and adjustments from the teacher as needed. This self-paced approach allows practitioners to develop a deeper understanding of their body and breath, while also cultivating discipline and self-reliance.
